Harold Perrineau on Boyd’s Breaking Point in FROM Season 4

Harold Perrineau joins Pop Culture Unplugged w/ Elias to discuss FROM Season 4 and Boyd’s emotional journey as the stakes continue to rise.

In this interview, Perrineau shares insight into Boyd’s mindset, how the character has evolved since Season 1, and why Season 4 pushes him to his breaking point. With the weight of leadership growing heavier, Boyd must navigate trust, survival, and the unknown as the town faces new challenges.

Perrineau also teases the major theme of the season — “trust no one” — and what fans should be paying attention to as the story unfolds.

[00:00:08] This is Pop Culture Unplugged w/ Elias. Harold, thank you for joining me today on Press Day. Thank you, Elias. I appreciate you having me, man. It's good to see you again. Congrats on Season four. What an exciting series. We've been waiting. It feels like we've been waiting a while for the series to return. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, I know, I know. We really haven't. It's been a minute. I know. I can't wait. You know, Boyd's been through a lot in this town.

[00:00:32] You know, when you look back at his journey so far from Season 1 to now, like, you know, what do you think has changed the most for him? Well, look, the thing I didn't really realize when I took the job in Season 1 is like, look, they were saying, like, he's the guy. He's going to lead us out of our town. He's the hero we're going to watch. And I figured, like, every hero, like, they're going to kick him and bite him and push him down a hill and, like, all that stuff. But, like, this season coming back, it was so emotionally challenging. Like, I didn't expect that.

[00:01:02] Like, when he starts the season, he's a broken dude. And that's what we have to do. That broken dude, we have to deal with him for the whole season because just things have happened. He's done things. Things are happening in this town. Like, he's just messed. He's really destroyed. And I didn't expect the emotional beatdown he was going to get and how hard it was going to be to actually do that. But how satisfying I think it will be when everybody sees it.

[00:01:32] Definitely. You know, Boyd has carried a lot of responsibility of leadership on his shoulders. You know, how do you think that weight now also is on him during this season? How would you describe that? I think it squished him. Like, if I'm being honest, Elias, I think, like, he's beat up and in pieces. But that being said, he still keeps moving forward. He's just like one of those little Terminator robots that just, like, he doesn't know where he's going. But he's going to keep stepping forward.

[00:01:59] And I think everything that's happened is really, like, really compressed him. Like, he killed a monster. I know. And the dude came back! You're right. What's happening? You know, Boyd's had some important relationships, too. You know, example, Donna, Kenny, Sarah, Ellis. You know, like, is there a dynamic you're excited for fans to see more of this season?

[00:02:24] Um, the thing that I really dig this season is that, like, yeah, we've been rocking with Boyd as the hero. But, like I said, he starts off this season like a broken guy. And, like, everybody has to step in to start being their own kind of hero. And their own kind of – and we're all realizing that there's no one person that's getting us out of here. We're all getting out of here together or we're not. Do you know what I mean?

[00:02:53] And so people start stepping up. Ellis, Jade, Ellis, Jade, Donna, who's always been stepped up. All these people start going, like, wait. And then as a community, that's actually – it looks to me like it's coalescing. And that's going to be the thing that gets them out. And I hope that that's true. I don't know. But that's the thing. I hope – I'm looking forward to fans seeing. And I hope they think the same thing that I think, that they're all coming together.

[00:03:21] They're finally talking to each other, some of them. And so I think that's really cool. Do you – in season four, you know, I don't want to tease or spoilers. Are we going to see a new side of Boyd, do you think? Yeah. I think we're going to see – you're going to see a guy who has to deal with his own mortality. Last question. Go ahead. No, no. That's difficult. Okay. I was going to say last question.

[00:03:50] Is there a theme, clue, or element that the viewers should pay attention for this year, this season? Yeah. And the theme is don't trust no one. And I mean no one. There's not a person you can trust because the characters can't trust anybody, including themselves. They can't trust what they see, what they hear, what they're doing. Trust no one. That's the theme of season four. Amazing. Harold, I want to thank you for giving me from this today.

[00:04:19] I hope this was your last interview of the day and you get some rest. Nah, Elias, I got a little bit more, but thanks, buddy. Thank you. Have a good day.
