Remington Hoffman, known for his dynamic role as Bryce in Zatima on BET+, recently sat down with Pop Culture Unplugged to discuss his multifaceted career, his approach to acting, and what fans can expect from Bryce's character development in Season 3.
From Modeling to Acting: A Global Adventure
Remington’s journey into acting is far from ordinary. Starting as a college basketball player, he was encouraged by his father to take an acting class, which led him to fall in love with theater. His modeling career, which took him from San Francisco to Singapore, Argentina, and New York, provided a global platform, but acting remained his true passion. Reflecting on his transition, Remington said, “I always felt like an actor pretending to be a model,” and emphasized that acting, with its depth and craft, was always where his heart was.
His Acting Method and Continuous Growth
Remington credits his ongoing growth as an actor to his love for learning and dedication to honing his craft. Currently studying Chekhov’s technique with Russian acting coach Nikolai Gusev, Remington explained how important it is to constantly challenge himself. “Acting is something you can always dive deeper into,” he shared, highlighting the contrast between acting and modeling in terms of complexity and emotional involvement.
He also revealed that he’s been involved in various extracurricular activities like boxing, martial arts, and even learning to sail—all skills that contribute to his versatility as an actor. He quoted Robert Downey Jr., stating, “You can always use everything that you do in your life in your work.”
Bryce’s Emotional Journey in Zatima
Remington shared insights into Bryce’s evolution throughout the series. Bryce is a complex character struggling to understand himself, which often leads to tension with those around him. Hoffman touched on how Bryce’s bisexuality and romantic entanglements with Angela and Zac create emotional layers for the character, noting that his inability to fully understand his own truth makes him inadvertently hurt others.
"Bryce is constantly dealing with things that even he doesn’t fully grasp," Remington said. "That leads him to make mistakes and hurt the people he cares about, but it also makes him incredibly relatable to audiences."
Connecting Personally with Bryce
When asked how he connects with Bryce, Remington admitted that he also strives to understand himself better in his personal life. He believes that when people aren’t fully honest with themselves, it can lead to unintentional hurt. “I think we all have parts of ourselves that we could be more honest about,” he reflected, adding that Bryce’s struggles feel incredibly human.
The Intensity of Season 3: What Fans Can Expect
Without giving away spoilers, Remington teased that the upcoming episodes of Zatima will explore new depths in Bryce’s journey. He mentioned a particularly pivotal moment following Bryce’s car accident, which will set the stage for some emotional developments. “Bryce is really hitting rock bottom,” he revealed. “But that’s when his journey gets the most interesting.”
Future Projects
In addition to his work on Zatima, Remington has exciting projects lined up, including a Tennessee Williams play, The Bar in the Tokyo Hotel, set for the spring of 2024. He’s also working on a feature film with co-star Cameron Fuller, which promises to blend action and comedy. On the writing front, Hoffman is developing a dark comedy feature that explores the microcosms of human interaction.
