Spencer Macpherson returns to Pop Culture Unplugged to discuss School Spirits Season 2, diving into Xavier’s evolution, the supernatural mysteries unfolding, and what fans can expect as the season progresses. From near-death experiences to unexpected alliances, Season 2 takes Xavier on a transformative journey that fans won’t want to miss.
Returning to School Spirits
When asked how it feels to be back, Spencer shared his excitement:
“Oh, it just feels incredible. I'm so excited about the second season. I honestly feel like as much as I love the first season, this might even be better.”
With fans already speculating on twists and turns, he’s been receiving plenty of messages from friends, family, and fans. However, secrecy is key:
“I’m sworn to secrecy, so it’s tough even for friends and family. I can’t really say too much.”
Xavier’s Journey in Season 2
Xavier has been through a lot since Season 1, and Season 2 pushes him further. Between Maddie’s return (in a way) and the unraveling of Janet’s true intentions, Xavier finds himself caught in the supernatural chaos.
“At the end of the first episode of Season 2, a pretty massive event happens to him, and it really shifts his perspective. After he's confronted with the reality that the supernatural exists, something shifts inside of him, and he's very much actively trying to better himself and seek out a resolution for Maddie.”
With the reappearance of Janet—now inhabiting Maddie’s body—Xavier has to navigate some serious emotional turmoil.
“For him, he hasn’t gotten the resolution of how he wronged Maddie. He wants to make amends for that. And the idea of someone inhabiting her body… in his mind, Matty is still in there.”
Expect some major developments in Episodes 5 and 6, where Spencer teased fans will get to see a new side of Xavier’s struggle.
Xavier’s Relationships: Claire, Nicole, and His Dad
One of the biggest evolutions in Season 2 is Xavier’s shifting relationships. His complicated dynamic with Claire (Rainbow Wedell) has changed significantly.
“They have a mutual understanding of one another. They’re two sides of the same coin—they both held up this mask to the world. And this season, they get to lower that mask and show a lot more depth.”
Meanwhile, Xavier also shares more screen time with Nicole (Kiara Pichardo), forming a new partnership.
“She’s fantastic. I love their dynamic and how they have this relationship going on online that’s completely unbeknownst to them. They bicker like an old married couple, which is really fun.”
And let’s not forget Xavier’s father, Sheriff Baxter (Ian Tracey). Their relationship has been tense, but Season 2 will continue to explore their complex father-son dynamic.
“Throughout Season 2, you see Xavier coming into the man he is. He’s living in the shadow of a generation his father comes from, but this season is about him finding out who he really is and trying to express that to his dad.”
What’s the Deal with Mr. Martin?
Another major mystery fans are dying to uncover is how Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman) keeps disappearing.
“Things aren’t super black and white in our show, which I love. Mr. Martin has a lot of depth that Josh brings. Hopefully, we find out more about his abilities in the coming episodes.”
Xavier, Matty, and Wally—Love Triangle?
A burning question among fans is how Xavier will react if he learns about Matty and Wally’s (Milo Manheim) relationship. Spencer’s answer was surprisingly mature:
“I think Xavier wants Matty to be happy. His goal right now isn’t about rekindling a relationship—he’s in a place of self-discovery. He just wants the best for Matty, whether that’s with Wally or Simon.”
Favorite Moments and What’s Next
Spencer teased that Episode 5: Ghost Who’s Coming to Dinner is one of his favorite episodes yet:
“That dinner in question is one of my favorite scenes, not only in this season but in the show. There are just so many different objectives at play, and it’s a really entertaining sequence.”
As for what’s next? Spencer is also starring in The Way Home, where he plays a time-traveling character from the 1800s adjusting to modern life.
“It’s a really cool dynamic to play. Hopefully, we get to do more of that and more School Spirits in the future.”
Will There Be a School Spirits Season 3?
While nothing is confirmed, Spencer is hopeful:
“We certainly hope for another season! We’re all fans of the show, and we’re curious where they’re going to go.”
And if he had his way, Spencer would love to see an episode where the ghosts swap bodies with the living characters.
“I think it would be a funny switch-up to see Wally, Rhonda, and Charlie in the living world for a day and all of us trying to guide them.”
