John Burr Talks The Gates

The director breaks down the thriller, deeper themes, and working with James Van Der Beek

This week on Pop Culture Unplugged w/ Elias, filmmaker John Burr joins the show to discuss his intense new thriller The Gates. Burr directed and wrote the film, blending suspenseful storytelling with deeper social commentary inspired by his upbringing in Texas.

The film follows three friends trapped inside a gated community where the illusion of safety quickly unravels. Burr explains that the concept came from his lifelong love of genre filmmaking combined with a desire to explore real-world cultural tensions through suspense.

A Story Years in the Making

For Burr, The Gates was a project that had been developing in his mind since childhood. Growing up, he would film small horror-style movies with friends in creepy locations around Dallas, always imagining how genre storytelling could be used to explore deeper ideas.

“I always wanted to tell the story of the biracial experience through the lens of genre… using a thriller to get people into the theater while exploring deeper themes beneath the surface.”

When the Setting Becomes a Character

One of the film’s most unique elements is the gated community itself. Burr explains that the location is meant to feel like a character within the story—something that appears safe and polished on the outside but reveals a much darker reality underneath.

“It projects safety… but safety for certain people and danger for others.”

This contrast is central to the film’s message, highlighting how environments can shape perceptions of security while also exposing deeper cultural tensions.

Finding the Right Cast Chemistry

Casting the three central characters was critical for Burr. He wanted actors who felt distinct from each other but believable as longtime friends navigating a stressful situation together.

During pre-production, the actors spent time bonding and improvising scenes from their characters’ past to build a believable shared history. According to Burr, the chemistry between them was immediate and something the crew noticed right away.

Working With James Van Der Beek

The film also features a memorable performance from James Van Der Beek, who takes on a role very different from the heroic characters audiences may associate him with. Burr intentionally wanted to cast someone known for playing protagonists and place them in a darker, more unpredictable role.

The director described Van Der Beek as an incredibly charismatic presence on set, capable of switching from friendly and relaxed between takes to intimidating and intense once filming began.

“He had such a charismatic presence… and then when the camera rolled he became this terrifying force.”

What Burr Wants Audiences to Take Away

At its core, The Gates is designed to deliver an exciting thriller experience. But Burr hopes the deeper themes of the story stay with viewers long after they leave the theater.

By blending suspense with layered social commentary, Burr wants audiences to enjoy the ride first—and then start conversations about the characters and ideas behind the story.

“I hope people walk out energized by the thriller… and then talk about the themes on the drive home.”
