Michael Jai White Talks Exit Protocol, Playing Isaac, and Reuniting With Dolph Lundgren

Action icon Michael Jai White joined Pop Culture Unplugged w/ Elias to dive into his newest film, Exit Protocol, a stealth-driven assassin thriller filled with shifting alliances, mind games, and a character who always seems five steps ahead. White opens up about stepping into the role of Isaac, what attracted him to the script, and how working alongside long-time friend Dolph Lundgren made the project even more meaningful.

Honoring a Friend & What First Hooked Him

Michael revealed that he originally joined Exit Protocol because the film was supposed to be directed by his friend Daniel, who sadly passed away just a month before production began.
Despite the sudden change, White’s decision to stay on the project was also influenced by Dolph Lundgren, who personally asked him to join the cast.

“It was originally going to be directed by my buddy Daniel… but he passed away before filming. Then Dolph wanted me to do it, so I came in support of him.”

Creating Isaac — A Man With a Code

White’s character, Isaac, is sharp, strategic, and constantly playing the long game. Elias asked how he approached building someone who always feels ahead of everyone else.

For Michael, the writing did a lot of the heavy lifting:

“It’s written in the script. There might be certain things about me that lend to that character. The first thing you try to do is figure out what you have in common.”

When asked if audiences should fear Isaac or understand him, Michael approached the role simply:

“I just try to play it as honest as I can. Any man should have a code… and if you don’t have one, you’re not a fully evolved man in my opinion.”

The film explores loyalty, survival, and the blurry moral lines that define men who operate in dangerous worlds—and White leaned into that balance.

Playing Both Sides

Isaac operates in a gray zone, sometimes mentor-like, sometimes menacing. Michael enjoyed the duality:

“It seemed like a fun thing to play… something I could sink my teeth into.”

That complexity, combined with the unpredictability of assassin-driven stories, makes Isaac one of the more intriguing characters in the film.

On-Set Chemistry With Dolph Lundgren

One of the standout elements of Exit Protocol is the dynamic between Michael Jai White and Dolph Lundgren. Their scenes bring a classic, old-school action energy.

“It becomes easy when you have someone like Dolph… he can’t hide his levels and intelligence. You see the power, the alpha status, but also the wise man underneath.”

Michael shared that working with Dolph again felt natural, rooted in mutual respect both as actors and characters.

Collaborating With Director Shane Stanley

White said that he and director Shane Stanley were “in lockstep” creatively, rarely needing to over-explain anything. Their understanding of Isaac’s purpose in the story helped guide the performance effortlessly.

What Michael Hopes Audiences Take Away

Although he hasn’t seen the final cut yet, Michael hopes viewers find the movie as engaging as he did when first reading the script.

When challenged to describe the movie in three words, he laughed:

“I haven’t seen it… but one word would be ‘mysterious.’ I hope people enjoy it as much as I did.”

Final Thoughts

Michael Jai White brings intensity, intelligence, and emotional complexity to Isaac in Exit Protocol, adding a grounded presence to a world packed with assassins, hidden agendas, and shifting loyalties.

His connection to the story—through friendship, collaboration, and long-time respect for Dolph Lundgren—makes his performance even more personal.

Exit Protocol is now available, and judging from Michael’s excitement (and curiosity!), audiences are in for a gripping, mysterious ride.
