During press day for Solo Mio, Kevin James joined Pop Culture Unplugged w/ Elias for an honest and heartfelt conversation about why this romantic comedy stands apart from everything he’s done before — and why it may be the film he’s proudest of.
Known worldwide for his comedic roles, Kevin revealed that Solo Mio allowed him to explore something deeper: vulnerability, healing, and the quiet moments that often define real life far more than punchlines.
“This is my favorite film by far,” James shared. “Everything just kind of came together, and I’m so thankful I got to do this with these people.”
Starting With Heartbreak, Not Laughter
Unlike many traditional romantic comedies, Solo Mio begins with heartbreak. Kevin explained that this was a deliberate choice — one rooted in truth.
“That’s everything in life — contrast,” he said. “Comedy comes from the worst moments, the painful moments. You need that explosion between heartbreak and hope.”
For Kevin, Matt Taylor’s journey isn’t just about romance. It’s about friendship — and the unexpected people who step in when someone is at their lowest.
“It’s not even about the relationships you expect,” he explained. “It’s about the friendships that pick this guy up, carry him, and help him find his way again.”
Italy as a Character in the Film
Filmed across Rome and Italy, Solo Mio uses its setting as more than a backdrop. Kevin described the location as a living, breathing character in the story.
“The music, the food, the people — even the language barrier — all of it became part of the movie,” he said. “Italy welcomed us. It felt like a family.”
He also praised the ensemble cast and emphasized how every performance — no matter how small — mattered.
“Every piece of this worked because everyone crushed it,” James said. “It became this machine, and it just worked.”
A Role That Hit Close to Home
Kevin admitted that Matt’s emotional isolation and heartbreak resonated deeply with him on a personal level.
“I’ve been crushed in love. I’ve felt alone,” he shared. “Matt starts from the bottom. He’s isolated, and he has to pick himself up slowly. That felt very real to me.”
When asked what advice Matt would give someone going through heartbreak, Kevin didn’t hesitate.
“You can’t give up,” he said. “That broken heart might be the thing you had to go through to get to real love.”
A Film Meant for Theaters
Above all, Kevin hopes audiences experience Solo Mio the way it was intended — together.
“This movie deserves to be seen in a theater,” he said. “Feeling the music, the emotions, the laughter, sitting next to strangers — that’s the magic of movies.”
As Kevin reflected on the experience, one thing was clear: Solo Mio represents a turning point — a reminder that sometimes slowing down and sitting in emotional moments can be more powerful than anything loud or flashy.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever get an experience like this again,” Kevin admitted. “But I’m grateful we had it.”
