Kerry Frances Talks Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and Playing Tammy

Kerry Frances returns to the Knives Out universe in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, delivering a scene-stealing performance as Tammy — a character fans quickly latched onto for her calm confidence and unbothered energy.

In a conversation with Pop Culture Unplugged, Frances opened up about reuniting with writer-director Rian Johnson, how the role came together without an audition, and why a simple granola bar became one of the movie’s most talked-about moments.

Finding Tammy

Frances revealed that she connected with Tammy instantly when reading an early version of the script.

“I read it and went, oh, that’s my part. I just knew her,” she said. “I wasn’t assuming anything — I just felt it in my gut.”

That instinct paid off. The role ultimately came to her as a direct offer from Johnson, marking their third collaboration together.

“He’s very generous with his belief in me,” Frances shared. “These are direct offers given to me from Ryan, which is such a gift.”

An Unbothered Energy

Tammy’s calm presence is a contrast to the chaos of the mystery — and that was intentional.

“This is my domain. This is my office,” Frances explained. “I’ll help you, but I won’t be groveling just because you’re a celebrity detective.”

That grounded approach, she said, is what made Tammy such a natural fit within the world of Knives Out.

The Granola Bar Moment Fans Love

One of the most talked-about details in Wake Up Dead Man is Tammy casually eating a granola bar during a key scene — something audiences immediately noticed.

“The granola bar was in there from day one,” Frances said. “That’s part of why I connected with her — I absolutely would be chewing gum or eating something during something important.”

What started as a small character detail quickly became a fan-favorite moment.

Working with Daniel Craig and Improvisation

Frances praised Daniel Craig for his generosity and collaborative energy on set, revealing that many of their moments came from improvisation.

“Daniel played around a lot with me in that scene,” she said. “He knew his character so well that it gave me so much more to do — and a lot of that made it into the final cut.”

That creative freedom helped elevate the scene beyond what was originally on the page.

Why Tammy Matters to the Mystery

Beyond the humor, Tammy plays a key role in guiding the audience through the mystery.

“She not only moves the story forward, but she shows us something important about Father Judd,” Frances explained. “You immediately think, this is a good human — he couldn’t be a killer.

That moment, she said, is crucial in shaping how viewers process the unfolding mystery.

What’s Next for Kerry Frances

Looking ahead, Frances shared that she has a number of projects in motion, including an award-winning short film she wrote, directed, produced, and starred in.

“I’m excited to get back on set, back to acting, back to singing — maybe even back to Broadway,” she said.

As for whether Tammy could return?

“I’d love to keep growing with these films,” Frances added. “They can go anywhere.”
