Pop Culture Unplugged recently sat down with Kerr Smith (beloved for his role as Jack McPhee on Dawson’s Creek) to reflect on the show’s enduring legacy, the upcoming F Cancer reunion event, and what fans can expect from his highly anticipated book about his Creek years.
The Surreal Passage of Time
Kerr admitted that the years since Dawson’s Creek first aired feel both incredibly fast and impossibly long:
“It feels like yesterday… and it feels like 30 years ago. Time just goes poof.”
With the series approaching its 30th anniversary, Kerr acknowledged how special it is that the show still resonates with fans around the world.
Dawson’s Creek Reunion for a Cause
The upcoming Dawson’s Creek reunion benefit in New York sold out in just 12 minutes — proof of the show’s lasting cultural impact. Kerr revealed he reserved five tickets for friends and family, but even he had to sit “way back in the nosebleeds.”
This reunion is about more than nostalgia — it’s also a chance to support an important cause. The event will raise funds and awareness for F Cancer, a nonprofit dedicated to prevention, early detection, and providing support for those impacted by cancer. For Kerr, the benefit is especially meaningful because it supports his longtime co-star James Van Der Beek, who has been open about his battle with cancer.
“It’s hugely important. James and I have talked a lot over the years about this, and I’m glad to be there for a friend.”
Writing His Dawson’s Creek Book
Kerr shared that he’s currently finishing up a book about his Dawson’s Creek years, which is set for release in late 2026. The book features deep dives into classic episodes, behind-the-scenes casting stories, and reflections on the challenges and breakthroughs of the late 1990s television landscape.
“For anybody that loves Dawson’s Creek, they’re going to love this book. We just kind of tear apart some of the more popular episodes, scene by scene.”
Jack’s Groundbreaking Storyline
One of the most significant revelations Kerr shared was how the character of Jack became one of TV’s first openly gay teens. Kerr explained that when he was cast, Jack was originally written to stir up drama between Dawson and Joey — but series creator Kevin Williamson approached him with a bold new direction.
“In ’98, it was a risky thing to do. But Kevin wanted to come out to the world with Jack, and we made history.”
Kerr described emotional encounters with fans over the years, including one man who said Jack’s storyline saved his life. Moments like these cemented Kerr’s pride in Jack’s cultural impact.
Spinoff Possibilities
While Kerr doesn’t see a full reboot happening, he revealed that a Capeside spinoff idea has been pitched before, centering on Jack and Doug raising Jen’s daughter.
“It was very much like The Fosters, but with two dudes. Maybe now is the time to revisit it.”
Looking Ahead
Beyond the reunion and his book, Kerr hinted at an independent film project in the works and upcoming appearances at conventions, including a possible return to 90s Con in Hartford.
