Kaitlyn Bernard on Bringing Rachel Jeffs’ Story to Life in Surviving My Father: The Rachel Jeffs Story

Lifetime’s Surviving My Father: The Rachel Jeffs Story tells the harrowing but inspiring journey of Rachel Jeffs, daughter of convicted cult leader Warren Jeffs. Based on Rachel’s memoir Breaking Free, the film explores her experiences of trauma, resilience, and courage in breaking away from a life of control. Actress Kaitlyn Bernard takes on the powerful role of Rachel, and she joined Pop Culture Unplugged to share her insights on the project.

A Fast Turnaround and a Powerful Role

Kaitlyn revealed that the film came together incredibly quickly, with production beginning just weeks after she landed the role. Despite the fast turnaround, she embraced the challenge of portraying Rachel’s emotional journey, calling it one of the most intense roles she has ever taken on.

Research and Preparation

To prepare, Kaitlyn immersed herself in Rachel’s memoir, documentaries, podcasts, and interviews. She even listened to the audiobook version of Rachel’s memoir to absorb her cadence and voice, which she says deeply informed her performance. “It was really empowering hearing Rachel describe her journey herself,” she explained.

Speaking with Rachel Jeffs

Before filming, Kaitlyn had the chance to connect with Rachel directly. Rachel’s words stuck with her: she simply told Kaitlyn she would be praying for her. That moment, Kaitlyn shared, brought the cast and crew to tears and underscored the weight of responsibility in telling Rachel’s story with authenticity and respect.

Balancing Trauma with Resilience

Though the film tackles difficult themes of abuse, Kaitlyn stressed that it’s also about survival and hope. “Yes, it’s about trauma, but it’s also about resilience,” she said. “Rachel’s ability to break free and build a new life is what makes her story so inspiring.”

Working with Michael Eklund

Michael Eklund, who portrays Warren Jeffs, delivered a chilling performance on screen but was, according to Kaitlyn, one of the kindest and most supportive scene partners off camera. Their trust and off-set camaraderie allowed them to navigate such a difficult father-daughter dynamic with professionalism and sensitivity.

What Kaitlyn Hopes Audiences Take Away

Kaitlyn hopes the film sheds light on the hidden world of polygamist sects and sparks conversations about abuse, survival, and resilience. While Rachel’s story may not be universally relatable, the themes of courage and breaking free resonate on a human level.

Looking Ahead

Though she’s drawn to darker, emotional projects like this one, Kaitlyn says she’s keeping her options open for what’s next. For now, she’s proud to have been part of a film that honors Rachel Jeffs’ bravery and shines a light on her story.
