Joshua Lee has officially joined the world of XO, Kitty for its highly anticipated second season, streaming January 16th on Netflix. Stepping into the role of Jin, a new character navigating the complexities of high school, friendships, and family expectations, Lee is ready to win over fans of the hit series. In an exclusive interview with Pop Culture Unplugged, Lee opened up about his experience joining the cast, playing a bad boy, and the unforgettable moments on set in South Korea.
On Booking the Role of Jin
Joshua Lee shared the whirlwind experience of landing the role while vacationing abroad.
“I actually found out I booked the show when I was in Portugal. I was on vacation and suddenly told I had to get ready to move to Korea. It was hectic, but I was just overwhelmed with excitement.”
Auditioning for the role of Jin was a memorable process for Lee, who felt an instant connection to the character.
“I submitted my tape, had a few callbacks, and even got to do a chemistry read with Anthony. The process was so fun.”
Who is Jin?
Jin enters XO, Kitty as a layered character with a tough exterior but a soft heart.
“Jin is a really cool, complex character. Like many high schoolers, he’s dealing with a lot — family pressures, societal expectations, and his own personal struggles. But at his core, he’s just trying to figure out how to be happy and carve his own path.”
While Jin initially comes across as a bad boy, Lee promised that audiences will see more to him as the season progresses.
“He might seem mean at first — he even bullies some of the other characters — but deep down, he’s a soft guy who really cares about the people around him.”
On Joining a Show with a Huge Fan Base
Lee admitted that joining a fan-favorite series like XO, Kitty came with its fair share of nerves.
“It’s a spinoff from a wildly successful franchise, and Season 1 did so well. I was definitely nervous, but the cast welcomed me with open arms. They’re all so talented and kind, which made it so much easier.”
Jin’s Growth and Themes in Season 2
According to Lee, Jin’s journey in Season 2 centers on growth and self-discovery.
“It boils down to two things: personal growth and finding love — whether that’s through his friendships or his decisions about his future. High school can be such a turbulent time, but Jin’s story shows how important it is to lean on the people around you.”
He added that the show’s authentic portrayal of relationships and struggles sets it apart from other teen dramas.
“There’s so much drama — love triangles, or should I say love pentagons! But it all feels real. And the way the show handles queer storylines is beautiful. It’s not about spectacle or coming out; it’s about people living their authentic lives.”
On Playing a Bad Boy
For Lee, stepping into the role of Jin was both a challenge and a joy.
“It’s so fun to play someone so different from me. Jin can be mean, but when the cameras stop rolling, we’re all laughing. It was such a fun experience.”
He highlighted a standout moment from filming:
“There’s a scene in the ski cabin where Jin gets called out as a ‘large, booger-eating first-party loser.’ We couldn’t stop laughing. At his core, Jin is playful and loves banter, even if he sometimes takes it too far.”
Filming in South Korea
The production’s setting in South Korea played a major role in bringing the world of XO, Kitty to life.
“Being in Seoul was magical. The production designers and set teams created the most beautiful environments, like a palace we filmed at for the finale. It made everything feel so real, and it helped me connect with Jin and my own Korean heritage in a meaningful way.”
On Working with Anna Cathcart
Lee had high praise for his co-star Anna Cathcart, who plays Kitty.
“Anna is so professional and talented. On my first day on set, she gave me a handwritten note and a small gift she got in Korea. It was such a kind gesture, and I still have it to this day. She’s an amazing scene partner, and I learned so much from her.”
What Fans Can Expect in Season 2
Lee teased that the upcoming season is packed with humor, drama, and heartwarming moments.
“There’s an episode at a ski cabin that was so much fun to film. We were laughing the entire time, and I think that energy really translates on screen. It’s one of my favorite episodes.”
He also shared his excitement for fans to see Jin’s journey unfold.
“I hope viewers take away how important growth and friendship are. High school can be messy, but it’s about being kind and treating people with respect.”
Ready for the Fan Reaction?
As XO, Kitty prepares to drop its second season, Lee is bracing himself for the passionate fan response.
“I’ve been warned! It’s nerve-wracking to think people from all over the world will be watching, but I’m excited. I’m planning to stay home and protect my peace for a while after it drops.”
What’s Next for Joshua Lee?
In addition to XO, Kitty, Lee has another project on the horizon.
“I have a show called Kingdom Project coming out in March on BBC and CBC. I’m really excited about that, but for now, I can’t wait for everyone to see XO, Kitty Season 2.”
