Gianni DeCenzo Talks Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 2: Dimitri’s Evolution, High Stakes, and the Series Finale

As Cobra Kai reaches its much-anticipated conclusion, fans are eager to see how the beloved karate series will wrap up. Gianni DeCenzo, who portrays Dimitri, joined us on Pop Culture Unplugged to discuss the upcoming episodes, his character’s journey, and what makes the final season so special.

It’s Bittersweet

For Gianni, saying goodbye to Cobra Kai after six seasons is a mix of emotions.

“It’s bittersweet,” he shared. “We’ve been doing this for six-plus years. It’s become a family. But it’s really nice to be able to end it on our terms and on such a high note. The creators and writers did an amazing job finishing up this chapter of everyone’s life.”

Dimitri’s Growth: From Nerd to Karate Competitor

Dimitri’s journey has been one of the show’s most compelling arcs, evolving from a shy, sarcastic nerd into a confident martial artist.

“This season, we see him competing in an international karate tournament—something he would’ve never imagined in his wildest dreams,” Gianni explained. “Dimitri’s always had this cockiness to him, but this season, it’s almost arrogant. It was so much fun to play.”

One of the season’s highlights? Dimitri’s bold new hairstyle. “He sees Hawk’s transformation and thinks, ‘I need to change my look too,’” Gianni laughed. “So, Dimitri rocks this pompadour. It’s his way of showing off his new bad-boy persona.”

Friendships Tested

While Dimitri’s friendships with Eli (Hawk), Sam, and Miguel remain central to his story, tensions arise this season.

“There’s turbulence between Dimitri and Hawk,” Gianni revealed. “What’s different this time is that Dimitri’s the aggressor. It’s a new dynamic for him, and I think fans will enjoy seeing how that plays out.”

Despite these challenges, the bonds formed among the characters remain strong. “They’re like a family now,” Gianni said. “Dimitri went from having no friends to finding this incredible support system.”

The International Stage

The season’s stakes are higher than ever, with Dimitri and his friends representing Miyagi-Do on a global stage.

“There’s a lot of pressure,” Gianni admitted. “It’s about more than just karate—it’s about the legacy of Miyagi-Do and the future of karate in the Valley. Dimitri is also trying to prove something to himself. He’s determined to show he’s capable and worthy.”

On Filming the Intense Fight Scenes

From massive brawls to emotional showdowns, the action in the final season is more intense than ever.

Gianni highlighted the epic fight scenes, including the battle against the Orange Dragons and the shocking death of Kwan. “We re-choreographed my fight scene with Jacob (Hawk) three times,” he said. “We didn’t get it down until right before action was called. It was nerve-wracking but so much fun.”

Reflecting on Kwan’s death, Gianni shared, “It was a huge twist. None of us knew about it until we got the script. It’s a first for the series—a teenage boy dies, and it changes everything. The stakes feel so real now.”

Hopes for Dimitri’s Legacy

As the series concludes, Gianni hopes fans remember Dimitri as someone who stayed true to himself.

“Dimitri never compromised who he was,” he said. “Even with his cocky moments, he remained his sarcastic, nerdy self. I hope that inspires fans to stay confident in who they are.”

Would Gianni Revisit Dimitri in a Spin-Off?

While Cobra Kai is ending, the possibility of spin-offs remains a topic of discussion. Would Gianni return to the role?

“Absolutely,” he said. “I’ve always thought about a spin-off where the Binary Brothers discover an underground robot fight club. It’d be like Real Steel meets Fight Club—a wild, nerdy adventure. But honestly, I’d love to explore anything that gives Dimitri more screen time.”

A Message for Fans

Before signing off, Gianni had a heartfelt message for the Cobra Kai community.

“Thank you so much for sticking with us,” he said. “When the show first came out, people were worried it would ruin The Karate Kid. But you gave us a chance, and I’m so glad we got to tell this story. I hope you enjoy the final season as much as we loved making it.”

The final part of Cobra Kai is set to premiere in February 2024. As Gianni promised, “It’s going to be crazy—and worth the wait.”
