Netflix’s newest holiday film, A Merry Little Ex-Mas, brings heart, humor, and winter magic just in time for the festive season — and at the center of it all is Emily Hall, who stars as Sienna, the warm and spirited daughter trying to bring her family together for one last Christmas. Emily joined Pop Culture Unplugged to talk about her journey with the film, working with an all-star cast, and what she hopes audiences take away from this holiday story.
Landing the Role of Sienna
Emily shared that her journey into the world of A Merry Little Ex-Mas began with a traditional audition, followed by an extensive callback session with director Steve. After waiting anxiously, she finally received the call that she booked the role — a moment she describes as “cool” and surreal for a lifelong fan of Christmas movies.
What excited her most was the chance to build Sienna from the ground up. With a minimal character description, Emily leaned into Sienna’s sweetness, honesty, and desire to keep her parents connected, even as she navigates her quirky relationship with her Harry Potter–obsessed boyfriend.

Emily’s first day on set was filled with nerves, given the iconic names attached to the project, but those worries faded immediately.
“They’re the kindest people you’ll ever meet,” she said, reflecting on how welcoming and down-to-earth the entire cast was.
She also admired how Oliver Hudson’s natural improv skills elevated their scenes, teaching her to “trust her instincts” and stay playful. Behind the camera, Melissa Joan Hart — who also produced the film — made a strong impression with her warmth and approachability, helping create an environment where everyone felt at ease.
One moment that touched Emily came after filming wrapped, when Alicia Silverstone referred to her as “the heartbeat of the movie.” Emily hadn’t heard it until our interview, and the genuine surprise and gratitude said everything.
Bringing Heart to the Holidays
As Sienna, Emily carries the emotional weight of navigating her parents’ separation while still trying to keep joy alive during the holidays. She explained that her approach was rooted in sincerity:
Rather than focusing on comedic beats, she grounded Sienna’s story in real-life feelings — wanting her family back together, supporting both parents, and championing acceptance, especially when it comes to her eccentric boyfriend Nigel.
“I think Sienna reminds people to let others be who they are,” Emily shared.
“Even when someone’s different, choose curiosity over judgment.”
It’s a message she deeply connects with on a personal level.
Filming in Real Snow
Unlike most holiday movies, this one didn’t rely on bags of fake snow — nature provided the real thing. Emily laughed while recalling the freezing set days, warm lodge breaks, and learning that the production never had to dip into their “snow budget.” Even their director stacked up multiple pairs of socks to survive the cold.
What She Hopes Audiences Feel
At its core, Emily hopes viewers take away joy, laughter, and a renewed appreciation for family traditions, especially during a time in the world when positivity feels needed more than ever.
“I hope people genuinely laugh and remember how important family is,” she said.

With the film now streaming, Emily is leaning into writing — completing two new proof-of-concept scripts and exploring new creative opportunities. While she’s waiting for her next big on-screen role, she’s excited to keep building meaningful stories both in front of and behind the camera.
