Elias Scoufaras Talks Greek Viper and Bringing 17 Characters to Life on Stage

Inside the powerful one-man show blending Greek family chaos with the dangerous world of the Montreal mafia.

On the latest episode of Pop Culture Unplugged, Elias sat down with actor and writer Elias Scoufaras to talk about his electrifying one-man show Greek Viper. The production has already enjoyed successful runs in both Montreal and Hollywood and is now heading to Beverly Hills.

The ambitious stage production features one actor performing 17 different characters in a 70-minute performance. Mixing family comedy, personal drama, and mafia storytelling, the show has been described as My Big Fat Greek Wedding meets A Bronx Tale.

A Story Years in the Making

Scoufaras revealed during the interview that Greek Viper has been in development since late 2022. Originally written as a feature film, the story eventually evolved into a one-man stage show after a friend suggested he perform every role himself.

What followed was nearly two years of writing, rewriting, and rehearsals with director Alec Norris to shape the story into its current form. The production was eventually trimmed from a two-hour script down to a tight 70-minute performance.

“It’s like My Big Fat Greek Wedding meets A Bronx Tale. It’s got that chaotic Greek family mixed in with the Montreal mafia.”

Greek Family Roots and Mafia Influence

The show centers around a charming Greek pianist named Johnny Yianni whose life changes dramatically when love, tragedy, and unexpected ties to the Montreal mafia collide. At the same time, he tries to keep everything hidden from his overbearing Greek parents.

Scoufaras explained that the family elements of the story are deeply personal, drawing inspiration from his own life and upbringing.

“I have completely stolen from my own life. The Greek family aspect is the heart of the piece.”

The Challenge of Playing 17 Characters

Performing a one-man show with 17 different characters presents a unique challenge. Rather than relying on costume changes or elaborate sets, Scoufaras transitions between characters through voice, posture, and subtle performance shifts.

According to the actor, the biggest challenge is maintaining the emotional rhythm of the show as it moves quickly between humor, tension, and dramatic moments.

“It’s probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do as an actor.”

Could Greek Viper Become a Movie?

During the conversation, Scoufaras also revealed that the team is developing Greek Viper into a feature film. While he believes the story fits well as a 90-minute to two-hour movie, some fans have suggested it could also work as a limited series.

For now, the focus remains on continuing the stage run and bringing the show to new audiences.
