Drew Powell on The Unbreakable Boy: A Story of Love, Strength, and Hope

Drew Powell is no stranger to captivating performances, but his role in The Unbreakable Boy holds a special place in his heart. The film, based on a true story, delivers a heartfelt message about family, resilience, and embracing life’s challenges with unwavering love. Powell joined Pop Culture Unplugged to discuss his experience working on the film, the impact of its powerful message, and why this story resonated with him so deeply.

A Story That Transcends: Powell on the Film’s Message

The Unbreakable Boy isn’t just another drama—it’s a film with heart, soul, and a universal message of love. Drew Powell describes it as a movie for everyone, especially parents, and a must-watch for those connected to children with special needs.

“To me, it’s a beautiful, life-affirming film for whoever you are. If you’re a parent—especially a parent of a child with special needs—this movie touches the heart in a profound way.”

The film follows the life of Austin, a boy with autism and a rare brittle bone disease, and how he sees the world differently. Powell believes this story is essential, as it doesn’t shy away from life’s struggles but instead celebrates the importance of family and resilience.

“It doesn’t shy away from the challenges we all go through, but it also celebrates our differences and the strength that comes from supporting one another.”

Powell’s First Reaction to the Script

As a father himself, Powell found The Unbreakable Boy particularly moving. He recalls how the script immediately struck an emotional chord with him.

“That first script reading is always important. Things can change from draft to filming, but with this one, I smiled and cried my way through it. I knew right away it was something special.”

He also shared how the story hit close to home, as he has friends with children who have autism and other special needs.

“The patience, the love, the effort parents put into raising a child with special needs—it’s something that has always amazed me. I think this movie does a beautiful job of highlighting that.”

Bringing Joe to Life: A Unique and Imaginary Character

One of the most intriguing elements of The Unbreakable Boy is Powell’s character, Joe—a fictional yet significant figure in the story.

“Joe is this real-but-imaginary character, someone Austin’s father, Scott, created when he was young. His parents would ask, ‘Who are you talking to?’ and he’d say, ‘Joe.’ And so, Joe was born.”

Playing an imaginary character gave Powell creative freedom, allowing him to shape Joe in a unique way.

“Joe is there for the hard times, the good times—sometimes the angel on the shoulder, sometimes the devil. He helps tell the story in a way that’s fun and meaningful. That made it such a joy to play.”

Fans who have attended early screenings have already embraced Joe as a standout character.

“I’ve heard that Joe is a real fan favorite, and I totally get why. He’s my favorite too!”

Working with Zachary Levi & Jacob Laval

Powell couldn’t say enough great things about the cast, especially Zachary Levi, who plays Scott, and Jacob Laval, who portrays Austin.

“Honestly, we all got really close during filming. It was the middle of COVID, so we were all in the same hotel, couldn’t do much, and just spent time together. There were nights with a guitar, singing songs by the fire—it was a real bond.”

He praised Jacob Laval for his incredible performance, noting how challenging the role was.

“For anyone, playing a role like Austin’s is difficult. But for a child actor to take on that responsibility? It’s remarkable. Jacob did such an amazing job, and the whole movie hinges on his performance.”

A Scene That Stays with Him

While Powell didn’t want to give too much away, he shared that there’s a moment near the end of the film that will stick with him forever.

“There’s a scene by the lakeside with Scott and Joe—where Scott starts questioning what Joe really is. It’s such a powerful moment. Every time I watch it, it hits me hard. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Final Thoughts & What’s Next

With The Unbreakable Boy set for release on February 21st, Powell is eager for audiences to experience the film’s uplifting and heartfelt story.

“This movie reminds us to find joy in life, to embrace our differences, and to love unconditionally. I hope people walk away from it feeling inspired.”

As for what’s next, Powell is keeping busy with new projects but remains incredibly proud of this film.

“This is one of my favorite roles I’ve ever played. I’m excited for the world to meet Joe and to see the beauty in Austin’s story.”
