Deric Augustine, best known for his dynamic acting in Godfather of Harlem, recently joined the cast of ABC's The Rookie. Portraying the confident and determined Officer Miles, Deric shared insights into his journey with the show, his character, and his deep love for storytelling in an exclusive interview on Pop Culture Unplugged. Here are the highlights from our chat:
The Thrill of Joining The Rookie
“Joining The Rookie feels incredible,” Deric said. “We have a phenomenal cast and crew, and the energy on set is unmatched. Everyone welcomed me with open arms, and it feels like a family.”
Deric emphasized how special this role feels compared to previous projects. “For the first time, I feel like I have a home here, rather than being a guest in someone else’s story. Miles has his own storyline, which is exciting.”
From New Orleans to Hollywood
Born and raised in New Orleans, Deric shared how his roots shaped his journey. “New Orleans is a city full of culture and family. It grounded me and gave me my humility.” Despite challenges, including caring for his sick mother as a teenager, Deric remained focused on his dream. “My mom actually forced my twin brother and me into theater, and that’s where it all began.”
The Role of Miles: A Perfect Fit
Deric revealed that the role of Miles felt tailor-made for him. “When I read the description, it was like reading about myself. Miles is from the South, played football in college, and had to pivot after an injury—just like me. It was meant to be.”
In the show, Miles transitions from a small-town officer in Texas to the fast-paced LAPD, where he must prove himself. “He’s labeled a rookie, even though he has two years of experience. He’s confident, maybe even cocky, but he quickly learns that L.A. policing is a whole new ballgame.”
High Stakes and Realism
The Rookie is known for blending intense action with emotional depth. Deric shared how he prepared for the physical demands of the role. “We went through extensive training with police liaisons, learning everything from how to hold a gun to tactical scenarios. It was intense but invaluable.”
Miles’ character also tackles real-world challenges. “You’ll see his journey of growth—both professionally and personally. The show dives into his backstory, from why he left Texas to his struggles and relationships. It’s all about layers.”
Balancing Confidence and Vulnerability
Deric acknowledged that fans have mixed reactions to Miles. “Some think he’s too cocky, but that’s just his eagerness to prove himself. Over time, you’ll see his humility and how much he’s willing to learn. He’s genuine at his core.”
Working with an All-Star Cast
On joining the seasoned cast of The Rookie, Deric shared, “Everyone is so down-to-earth. There was no hazing or intimidation—it was all support and collaboration. Eric Winter (Tim) has been like a mentor to me on and off-screen.”
He also teased some upcoming dynamics: “Miles develops a real bond with Patrick, the other rookie, and you’ll see that evolve in the next episode. It’s one of my favorite dynamics on the show.”
Action, Heart, and Humor
When asked what fans can expect from Miles, Deric said, “On-duty, you’ll see him navigating the high-stakes world of the LAPD, learning as he goes. Off-duty, you’ll get a glimpse into his personal life—family struggles, love interests, and his aspirations.”
Deric is confident viewers will connect with Miles’ journey. “It’s a story of growth and perseverance. Miles has a fire and hunger to succeed that I think many people can relate to.”
Looking Ahead
While Deric is focused on bringing Miles to life, he has other projects on the horizon, including a guest role in Godfather of Harlem. But his passion project is a YA fantasy novel he’s written over six years. “It’s called New Orleans, about wizards in my hometown. I’d love to see it adapted into a film or series someday.”
