Danay Garcia Talks M.I.A., Leah’s Strength, Family, and Survival

Pop Culture Unplugged with Elias spoke with Danay Garcia during press day for M.I.A., where she opened up about playing Leah and the emotional foundation she brings to the series.

In M.I.A., Leah is more than just a strong presence. She represents family, discipline, protection, and love in a dangerous world. Garcia described Leah as someone who creates stability around her family while navigating unpredictable circumstances.

“I think she defines family. That’s what she fought for.”

Garcia explained that Leah sees parts of herself in Etta and recognizes the danger that could come from Etta’s instincts, energy, and fearlessness. That connection becomes a key part of Leah’s role in the story, as she tries to guide and protect her daughter while keeping her away from the darker side of their world.

One of the biggest qualities Garcia wanted to bring to Leah from the start was control. Leah is someone who can read people, sense when something is wrong, and protect her family without hesitation.

The actress also talked about building her relationship with Shannon Gisela, who plays Etta. Garcia shared that the two bonded while training on boats in Miami, learning how to move through the world of the show together before bringing that mother-daughter relationship to screen.

“It was so easy to feel like she’s my family.”

For Garcia, one of the biggest challenges of the series was staying present. Rather than looking too far ahead in the story, she focused on what Leah needed in each moment, allowing the character’s emotions and choices to unfold day by day.

Leah’s Role in the World of M.I.A.

Leah brings emotional weight to the series because everything she does is rooted in love. Even when the story moves through action, danger, and high-stakes drama, Garcia sees love as the force that connects the characters.

  • Leah represents family, stability, and protection
  • Her influence shapes Etta’s choices throughout the story
  • Garcia brings discipline, control, and emotional depth to the role
  • The series blends action, grit, love, and survival
  • Her bond with Shannon Gisela helped shape the mother-daughter dynamic

When asked to describe M.I.A. in three words, Garcia pointed to action, grit, and love. Those themes are at the heart of the series and help explain why Leah stands out as such an important figure in the story.
