Clyde Phillips Explores Dexter’s Origins: Inside the Making of Dexter: Original Sin

Clyde Phillips, the creative mastermind behind Dexter: Original Sin, recently sat down with Pop Culture Unplugged to discuss revisiting the world of Dexter through the highly anticipated prequel series. From casting the perfect young Dexter to weaving a compelling narrative, Phillips shared insights on how this latest installment came to life.

Revisiting the World of Dexter

When asked what inspired him to revisit Dexter's story with a prequel, Phillips admitted the idea stemmed from the immense success of Dexter: New Blood, Showtime’s most successful series to date. Initially tasked with creating a sequel, Phillips credited Chris McCarthy of Paramount and MTV Entertainment for suggesting the prequel concept, which sparked the creation of Dexter: Original Sin.

“Chris McCarthy said, ‘I’m not really in the sequel business. I do Yellowstone, 1883, 1923. Can you come up with something in a week?’” Phillips recalled. Teaming up with a few trusted writers, he pitched the idea and received an enthusiastic green light with just four words: “Phenomenal. Let’s do it.”

Casting the Young Dexter

Patrick Gibson steps into the iconic role of Dexter Morgan, portraying the character during his formative college years. Phillips emphasized the importance of finding someone who could believably evolve into the Dexter fans know from the original series.

“We wanted somebody who we would believe would grow into being the Dexter that Michael C. Hall portrayed,” Phillips explained. Gibson’s audition impressed both Phillips and director Michael Lehmann. “We were looking at each other like, ‘Holy shit, we’ve got to land this guy,’” Phillips said.

Father-Son Dynamics and Christian Slater as Harry Morgan

The prequel introduces Christian Slater as Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father and moral compass. Phillips described the dynamic between Harry and young Dexter as central to the show’s narrative.

“Half the show takes place in their house,” Phillips noted. “It’s a father-son show… I don’t know if you can call a serial killer show a family show, but it’s also very funny.”

Slater’s portrayal of Harry delves into the character’s internal struggles and the challenges of mentoring a son destined for darkness. The show’s dual timelines—1991 and 1973—further explore Harry’s influence on Dexter’s upbringing.

Themes of Family and Fate

Phillips highlighted the importance of exploring the Morgan family dynamic, including Dexter’s relationship with his sister, Debra, played by Molly Brown.

“We dive deep into what each character is going through,” he said. From baby Dexter’s early years to his college days, the prequel examines how Dexter’s unshakable urges and ultimate fate are shaped by his environment and relationships.

What’s Next for Dexter: Original Sin

Fans eager to binge the series will need to practice patience, as Phillips teased that the story “gets better and better” with each episode. With its mix of dark humor, intense drama, and intricate character development, Dexter: Original Sin promises to deliver a fresh yet familiar take on the beloved franchise.
