Returning to Angie Everett wasn’t something Cindy Sampson thought she would get to do again. Now, Private Eyes West Coast has brought her back alongside Jason Priestley, with a new setting and a different stage of life for Angie and Matt Shade.
Speaking with Elias on Pop Culture Unplugged, Sampson reflected on the unexpected return, the chemistry that made the original series work, and how marriage and parenthood have opened up fresh stories for its central duo.
A Private Eyes Comeback She Never Saw Coming
For Sampson, the original show’s ending felt abrupt. She recalled efforts to find a way forward after its cancellation, but eventually stopped expecting another chapter.
“I never in my wildest dreams thought that this would be happening.”
That history made the call about Private Eyes West Coast especially surprising. Returning also meant reconnecting with a working relationship she remembered fondly. Sampson described the original production as a place filled with laughter, making the opportunity to reunite with Priestley an easy one to embrace.
With the earlier series ending during the pandemic, she said the cast hadn’t been able to say goodbye in the way they might have hoped. Getting another chance carries an emotional weight beyond simply stepping back onto a set.
Angie and Shade Move Beyond Will-They-Won’t-They
Sampson admitted she initially questioned whether Angie and Shade becoming a couple would work. Their romantic uncertainty had been such a big part of the original series that resolving it once seemed like a potential ending.
Instead, their relationship provides a starting point for the spinoff. Working together as spouses, raising a child and navigating family life give the characters new pressures to juggle alongside their cases.
Sampson sees a more open Angie in this chapter. The guarded detective who once kept her circle small has grown into someone more grounded and receptive. But that evolution hasn’t erased her investigative instincts: Sampson was clear that Angie never truly wanted to leave detective work behind.

Returning to That Familiar Chemistry With Jason Priestley
The circumstances around Angie and Shade have changed, but Sampson believes their familiar dynamic remains intact. Their shared history adds a sense of closeness, while the banter still feels like the characters she and Priestley know so well.
She credited the new writing team with capturing their voices, making the transition back into the roles feel natural.
“It just felt like riding a bike.”
That familiarity helps connect the original series to its new chapter. Angie can grow, and her relationship with Shade can develop, while their exchanges retain the rhythm fans remember.
When Angie’s Life Mirrors Cindy’s Own
Some of Angie’s changes felt especially personal to Sampson. Reading the pilot script, she recognized the challenges of raising a young child while returning to a demanding job.
Filming on the West Coast also meant navigating a move away from her Toronto home while balancing work and parenting. The similarities gave her a direct connection to Angie’s situation.
“It was like life imitating art, imitating life.”
Undercover Disguises, Surfing and More Physical Comedy
Asked about a favorite episode to film, Sampson singled out a surfing story that sends the characters undercover. Her preview included ridiculous wigs, plenty of comedy and a substantial fight scene.
It reflects an aspect of Private Eyes West Coast she particularly enjoys: leaning further into physical comedy. For an actress who spoke warmly about her early love of sketch comedy, that playful material brings another pleasure to returning.
She also discussed taking on stunts when permitted, joking about how she and Priestley feel the effects of all that running more than they once did.
Cindy Sampson Shares a Season Two Update
During the interview, Sampson said Private Eyes West Coast had already received a season two pickup. She shared that she expected to return to work in March or April 2027, describing the reassurance of knowing another round of episodes was ahead.
For now, she is enjoying the balance between playing Angie and spending time with her own family. After a return she never expected, the role has found its way back into her life at a particularly fitting moment.
