Actress Chandler Lovelle recently joined Pop Culture Unplugged to share insights into her role as Daniela in Dexter: Original Sin and her dynamic career spanning musical theater, opera, TV, and film. As a new addition to the Dexter universe, Chandler brings a fresh perspective to a beloved world while carving her own path in entertainment.
A Journey Through the Arts
Chandler’s career has been anything but ordinary. Beginning in musical theater, she discovered her passion for storytelling on stage before transitioning to the world of film and television. “I started on Bloodline, and it was unlike anything I’d ever experienced,” she shared. “That’s when I got bit by the film and TV bug.”
Her work has since included projects with legendary directors like Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) and Michael Showalter (The Idea of You). “Working with Spielberg was a dream. It was a huge milestone that made me feel like I belong in this industry,” she said, reflecting on the validation such opportunities bring.
Chandler’s ultimate goal? “I’d love to join a long-running series and build an on-set family. That’s the dream I’m manifesting for myself.”
Joining the Dexter Universe
Chandler landed the role of Daniela, one of Deb’s volleyball teammates and friends, in Dexter: Original Sin through a competitive audition process. “I initially auditioned for a few other roles, including Dexter’s mom in flashbacks,” she revealed. “When they finally cast me as Daniela, I was thrilled. She’s a party girl, fun-loving, and someone who goes where the action is.”
The production even required volleyball training. “We trained half the summer to play volleyball really well,” Chandler recalled. “It was such a fun experience and created a camaraderie among the cast that felt like a real sports team.”
Playing a new character in a universe with such a devoted fan base was a unique experience for Chandler. “Since Daniela is an original character, I didn’t have to emulate anyone. That gave me freedom to really make her my own,” she explained.
Working With the Cast
Chandler had high praise for her co-stars. On Molly Brown, who plays young Debra Morgan, she said, “Molly is hilarious and immensely talented. She lights up the screen and makes everyone laugh even between takes.”
As for Patrick Gibson, who portrays a young Dexter, Chandler noted his remarkable ability to channel Michael C. Hall’s iconic character. “Patrick is so gracious and kind. Watching him switch into Dexter with the mannerisms and voice was incredible.”
The Appeal of Dexter: Original Sin
Set in the 1990s, Dexter: Original Sin dives deep into Dexter’s formative years, exploring how he develops the infamous code taught by his father, Harry. “It’s fascinating to see how Dexter became this lovable serial killer we all root for,” Chandler said.
She also loved the nostalgia of the 1990s setting. “The costume fittings were incredible—everything was authentic vintage. Seeing 300 extras in full ’90s garb during a volleyball game was so nostalgic.”
What’s Next for Chandler Lovelle
Chandler’s versatility continues to shine with upcoming projects, including her debut in animation. “I have a guest star role in a cartoon, but I can’t share much more about it yet,” she teased. “There may also be some musical theater in my future.”
As for Dexter: Original Sin, fans can look forward to seeing Chandler in five episodes this season. While she couldn’t reveal too much about Daniela’s arc, she hinted at some “mischief” that will leave a mark on Deb’s journey.
Final Thoughts
Reflecting on her career, Chandler shared her excitement for what’s to come. “I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, and I can’t wait to keep exploring new avenues in film, TV, and theater.”
