Brec Bassinger Brings Real-Life Tension and Sisterly Dynamics to The Man in the White Van
Brec Bassinger recently sat down to discuss her role as Margaret in the upcoming suspense thriller The Man in the White Van, a chilling period film based on true events. Bassinger shared insights into the layered character she portrays, the film’s poignant themes, and memorable experiences from set alongside industry icons.
What Drew Brec to the Role of Margaret
When asked about what attracted her to the project, Brec immediately highlighted the story’s real-life roots.
“It being based on a true story was such a cool opportunity,” she explained. “I loved that it was also a period piece. It’s a challenge as an actor to explore how women in the seventies carried themselves, from wardrobe to dialogue. I was excited to dive into that.”
The Complex Sisterly Relationship
Bassinger described the relationship between her character, Margaret, and her sister Fanny (played by Madison Wolfe) as central to the story.
“Madison is stupid talented,” Brec shared with a laugh. “Working off her energy was inspiring. I have two older brothers, so I pulled from my real-life relationship with them—the bickering, the fighting, but ultimately the love and support.”
Bassinger made a conscious effort to ensure Margaret didn’t come across as “just the bratty older sister.”
“To me, she’s so much more than that. I really wanted her reasoning to be valid for everything she did, whether it was arguing with her sister or begging her mom for a landline. I think she was probably a little jealous of Fanny and looked up to her strength.”
Warren Skeels’ Unique Direction
Director Warren Skeels gave Brec valuable tools to bring Margaret to life, including techniques she plans to use on future projects.
“Warren had me come to set a day early to spend time in Margaret’s bedroom. He told me to figure out what parts of the room were most important to her. It seems so small, but it made such a difference. By the time we were filming, I felt comfortable jumping on the bed, playing with the rotary phone—it made Margaret feel real to me.”
Working with Hollywood Icons: Sean Astin and Ali Larter
Sharing scenes with seasoned actors Sean Astin and Ali Larter was a career highlight for Brec.
“Ali is just such a strong, inspiring woman. She’s been in Hollywood for a long time, and spending time with her was so special,” Bassinger said. “And Sean—just iconic.”
Brec shared a heartwarming behind-the-scenes story: “We had a family dinner on set, and neither Madison nor I had seen The Goonies. So Sean put the movie on, and we all sat there watching it as our family unit. I was like, things I never thought would happen in my life!”
The Message Behind The Man in the White Van
Bassinger hopes the film raises awareness about safety and trust in one’s instincts.
“Stuff like this really happens, and it’s important to build awareness. In the seventies, there wasn’t as much access to news, but today, we have the tools to stay informed. If you feel suspicious about someone, don’t ignore it—tell someone. It’s okay to be cautious.”
Conclusion: A Story That Resonates
With its suspenseful narrative and powerful performances, The Man in the White Van promises to captivate audiences. Brec Bassinger’s dedication to portraying Margaret with depth and authenticity adds a relatable and emotional layer to the film’s tension.
The Man in the White Van delivers not only chills but an essential message about safety and awareness, making it a must-watch.
