With Netflix’s Pulse soaring to the top of the global charts, Ash Santos is right at the center of the show’s emotional whirlwind as Nia — a tough EMT caught in a love triangle with two doctors and dealing with her own physical and emotional recovery. I caught up with Ash to break down the fan reaction, Nia’s arc, and what she hopes comes next.
A Scrappy EMT in the Middle of It All
Ash originally auditioned for two other roles on Pulse before landing Nia — a last-minute casting that turned out to be the perfect fit.
“They said she’s a scrappy EMT from a big family, involved in a love triangle with Tom and Cas. That was all I needed to say yes,” Ash shared. “I’ve always loved medical dramas. I grew up on ER and Grey’s Anatomy.”
Confined but Fierce: Acting From a Hospital Bed
Nia spends a large chunk of the first season recovering in a hospital room — a challenge for an actor like Ash who’s used to movement.
“It really grew me in a way I needed. I love using space and my body, but being confined meant I had to dig deeper emotionally,” she explained. “The special effects makeup and wound prosthetics? I loved it — I’m a huge horror fan!”
Love Triangle Drama: Team Nia or Team Cas?
Fans of Pulse are deep in their feelings about the show’s central triangle, sparking fierce debates online.
“Of course I’m biased,” Ash laughed. “But it’s amazing to see people so invested. As long as they’re talking about it, that’s a win.”
Ash says Nia is drawn to Tom because he’s nothing like what she’s used to: “They’re both confident and competitive. She sees the real him that he tries to hide.”
And that tension with Cas? “It was my favorite scene to shoot. That confrontation was everything. I think after that moment, there’s mutual respect. It’s a fresh take on two women in a love triangle — not catty, just honest.”
Nia’s Growth and Season 2 Dreams
So, what’s next for Nia — if Netflix gives Pulse a second season?
“I’d love to see her recover and get back to work. Her career means so much to her, and I want more of that EMT perspective onscreen,” she said. “And of course, explore more with Tom. There’s real potential there.”
Would she change anything about Nia? “Not a thing,” Ash said. “She’s relentless, unafraid, and knows who she is. I love that about her.”
On Working with Jack Martin and Jessica Rothe
Ash had nothing but praise for her co-stars.
“Jack is kind, warm, always present — he makes every scene easy,” she said. “And Jessica… wow. We bonded immediately. She became a grounding force for me on set. She’s one of those people who just gets you.”
What’s Next for Ash
Ash teased her next project — a new film she’ll begin shooting in June.
“It’s something I’ve manifested for years. The script hit me so hard I thought, ‘There’s no way I’ll book this.’ And now it’s happening. I can’t wait to share more soon.”
Message to the Fans
