Embracing Tonya’s Journey and the “Rat” Label
In Hysteria!, Aline plays Tonya, a character navigating the chaotic world of high school friendships and a small-town fear of the occult during the Satanic Panic era. Interestingly, Tonya’s moral stance has earned her a reputation as “the rat” among fans—a label O’Neil finds amusing. “I actually think Tonya is one of the most levelheaded people in the show,” she explained, adding, “She’s staying true to herself despite the intense peer pressure and fear around her.”
Rather than viewing Tonya as a tattletale, O’Neil hopes audiences see her character’s courage and self-respect. “If you were in that situation, what would you do differently? Tonya stands up for herself, even when it’s not popular,” she said.
The “Wild Ride” of Hysteria! and the ‘80s Metal Scene
Set in the 1980s, Hysteria! is filled with head-banging metal tracks and nods to the Satanic Panic. Aline admitted that she’s more of a “girly pop” fan, gravitating towards ‘80s hits like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” rather than heavy metal. Yet, she’s become a bit more attuned to the genre, thanks to the show and fans who have compiled Hysteria! playlists on Spotify.
The chaotic energy of the era and the series’ unique blend of horror, comedy, and supernatural elements were aspects that drew Aline to the role. When she landed the part, she immediately dived into learning about the Satanic Panic and its impact on communities during that time.

When asked about her dream roles, O’Neil revealed a love for psychological and intense dramas. “I’d love to be part of something like Euphoria or Tell Me Lies,” she shared. “And a true horror film would be amazing. I’m a big fan of thrillers and have always wanted to dive into the slasher genre.” Hysteria! gave her a taste of horror, with scenes of suspense, high-stakes drama, and moments that she described as “covered in blood and thrillingly intense.”
Working With a Stellar Cast
O’Neil couldn’t speak highly enough of her fellow cast members. She expressed admiration for stars like Bruce Campbell and Julie Bowen, describing the experience as surreal and educational. She particularly enjoyed working alongside Anna Grace Barlow, who played her best friend Judith. “Anna has such a contagious personality,” O’Neil said. “We had so much fun on set, especially during our scenes in the police station. I hope there’s more to explore with Tonya and Judith’s friendship if there’s a Season 2.”

As for what lies ahead for Tonya, O’Neil hopes to dig deeper into the character if the show is renewed. She sees potential for exploring Tonya’s dynamic with other characters, especially as Tonya continues to hold onto her grounded perspective amidst the rising supernatural chaos. “I’d love to see more of the backstory, maybe explore some underlying Sunday school ‘beef’ between Tonya and the other characters,” she joked.
Despite the “rat” label, O’Neil believes Tonya’s honesty and authenticity are central to the show’s message. She shared, “Hysteria! explores mob mentality and paranoia. Tonya doesn’t fall into that trap; she sticks to her truth, even when things get rough.”
What’s Next for Aline O’Neil?
While Aline has exciting projects in the pipeline, she’s keeping her fingers crossed for a second season of Hysteria!. “I’d love nothing more than to bring Tonya back,” she said.
