James Kot, a talented Canadian actor known for his roles in Netflix's 'Virgin River' and Hallmark's 'When Calls The Heart,' brings his charm and skill to the series. Beyond acting, James mentors aspiring actors through his studio, Kot Creative Studios, and produces heartfelt projects like the short film "You Are the Blue," which sheds light on invisible illness and identity. Read on to discover his insights on playing Frank Jr., his experiences with Hallmark and Netflix, and more!
Q: You’ve played diverse roles, from Don in 'Virgin River' to Thomas Higgins in 'When Calls The Heart.' How does your experience with Hallmark and Netflix productions differ?
James Kot: Netflix has such a wide range of programming, and the tone and subject matter we explored with Don on 'Virgin River' were more direct in handling intense topics. On 'When Calls the Heart,' the approach is more implied, and the point of view is gathered over time. I do think Hallmark is prioritizing taking on more challenging material and breaking ground with new shows. We need to embrace diversity and encourage more unique storytelling on both platforms!
Q: What has been the most challenging role you've taken on so far, and how did it shape you as an actor?
James Kot: Every role is challenging in its own way! I was involved in the first 'Good Doctor' episode after the pandemic, playing a son whose mother was a frontline healthcare worker dying from COVID. It was incredibly challenging because I felt a deep responsibility to portray that story accurately, especially for those who lost loved ones during that first wave, particularly those working on the frontline. It was a very personal and impactful experience.
Q: In addition to acting, you mentor other actors through Kot Creative Studios. How has teaching influenced your own craft?
James Kot: I love working with actors and helping them reach their goals. At Kot Creative Studios, we use a "tools, not rules" approach, personalized to each actor. What works best for me is allowing my curiosity to take over and exploring what interests me about a character. I lead with joy and presence, and that’s contagious! We have a wonderful community at the studio.
Q: Your short film "You Are the Blue" addresses the topic of invisible illness and identity. Can you share what inspired you to create this project and why it's so close to your heart?
James Kot: I’ve had several people in my life struggle with invisible illnesses, which can cause deep suffering because, to the outside world, they may appear completely healthy. Finding a voice for those affected by this was important to my director, Beatrice King, and I think it came together in a beautiful way. Eden Summer Gilmore shines in the lead role with such depth and understanding.
Q: What drew you to the role of Frank Jr. in "The Chicken Sisters," and how did you prepare to embody this character?
James Kot: Frank Jr. is making mistakes left and right when we first meet him! While he wasn’t making the best choices, his drive to prove himself was endearing, which made me interested in finding the heart of the character and his need for acceptance and success.
Q: How would you describe the dynamic between Frank Jr. and the other characters in the series?
James Kot: Frank Jr. is an antagonist to most characters initially, as he tends to make decisions without consulting his family. He’s not getting along with his wife, mother, or the host of Kitchen Clash! As the series progresses, he shows more vulnerability, and there’s plenty of room for comedy. Big heart, big laughs!
Q: Can you share any memorable or funny moments from filming on set, especially considering the Southern charm and family drama aspects of the show?
James Kot: We had a blast on set! One day, I was mistakenly sent to a church set wearing Sergio's jeans, which were much tighter than Frank Jr.’s usual attire. Given Frank Jr.'s storyline with Amanda and Sergio, it was hilarious that he’d start wearing tight jeans to church! The wardrobe team quickly fixed it, but not before we all had a good laugh.
Q: How closely does the show stay true to KJ Dell’Antonia’s bestselling novel, and were there any significant changes that impacted your portrayal of Frank Jr.?
James Kot: The essence of KJ's writing is captured perfectly, but interestingly, Frank Jr. doesn't appear in the novel! It’s the biggest change from book to series. I'm incredibly grateful that our creator, Annie Mebane, made the choice to bring Frank Jr. to life in the TV version.
Q: What do you hope viewers will take away from "The Chicken Sisters," and how does it stand out from other family dramas?
James Kot: I hope viewers laugh, cry, and have a great time watching Season 1! The story’s message about family, forgiveness, and fried chicken delivers a comedic heart of gold. Enjoy!
